The Big Secret About Restaurant Clubs (Why National
Chains Have Clubs, and Why They Keep Them Around)The next time you happen into a national chain restaurant (God forbid), take
a look around. Chances are you will see, at some point in your visit, a
signup slip for their birthday or “preferred customer” club.

Olive Garden, Red Robin, Carrabba's, Longhorn, Chipotle, hundreds of
others - they all have clubs of some kind or another. Since so many chains
have clubs, many independent operators have taken the plunge as well.
We have discovered that most independent restaurateurs start a Birthday /
VIP for one of two reasons:
1- Me Too!!! (Most of the national chains with a club, so they better
start one as well)
2- A Big Thank You!!! (It is a great way to thank their customers for
patronage)
Both of those are “OK” reasons for starting a Birthday / VIP club, but the
right reason to do it goes a little deeper. National chains know that clubs are
simply the single best way to start to collect real, usable and valuable
information about their customers.
Unfortunately, most restaurateurs live in a world of delusion: They think
they know who their customers are. But in fact they really don’t have a clue
about their guests names, addresses, emails, anniversaries or birthdays.
Sure, they “recognize” some customers when they walk through the front
door on a busy Saturday night, but ask them to produce a list of customer
names and addresses and they fall flat on their face.
And that, my friend, is the real reason to start a Birthday / VIP Club: so you
can have a real, honest to goodness, accurate and up to date list of your
customers. That is exactly why the national chains have them (and keep
them going), and why many leading independents have one as well.
Think about what you will be able to do with list of 1,000 (or 10,000)
customer names, addresses and emails!
The real reason (and the big secret) to have a Birthday / VIP Club is to build
your list!
